Alan -- Thanks for the validation of my search. The SX840 had the best combination of cooling and ease of access that I found. I didn't want to influence any responses by leading with that choice, so I left it open ended...we're on the same page here. I'd be happy if I could get within a chapter or 2 regarding trading...

Howard -- I don't have room for a full tower. Limited in height to 22 inches or I need a new desk...argh

Jon -- I definitely want to cool the drives, but don't know if I'll have the room. If need be, I'll modify the side panels to mount some fans...

When fully loaded, I'll be filling the 3 internal 3.5 bays and the external 3.5 bay with Maxtor 80 GB D740X (6L080J4) drives. With the floppy, that's it for the 3.5 inch bays. The SX840 has 3 5 inch bays. CDRW and DVD eat up 2.

To start, I think I'll get 2 drives (striping for speed) and use the top and bottom internal bays until I get a feel for the temperatures. Once I'm set up, have things configured and start to have "mission critical" data on the machine, I'll do whatever I have to do so I can add the other 2 drives and run it Raid 0 + 1 (striping and mirroring).

Thanks all for the input.
