Well, you painted a touching story about the cannery girl and the gardener -- has all the makings of a novel, if you ask me. Who could disagree that this was love at its purest?

I'm glad you liked it.

Just what makes you so certain that many of these "abuses" were not equally loving, consensual affairs between young priests and young teens?

I'm not. A few of them might have turned out to have been positive experiences for the victims. Regarding the priests, my outrage is directed at the system that didn't deal with the problem. I would imagine that the individual priests and their victims are a mixed bag. Still, there are clear differences between a priest, who is in a position of authority, moral authority, and trust who has made vows of celibacy, and who is sneaking around, and a flower-child, itinerant gardener.

The closer kids get to eighteen, the less clear child molestation becomes. What is an affair on the eighteenth birthday is a crime the day before. I respect the legal difference. The ethical and practical differences are grey, IMO.

You have not finished your manuscript about Cannery Girl, and how she felt 10, 20, or 30 years later

I did report on how several men reported they felt decades later. This direct testimony has influenced my opinion.

who seduced her when she was sixteen and an innocent virgin.

And I didn't say that Cannery Girl was a virgin. What are the chances that a sixteen year old with a lousy relationship with her father is a virgin?

It occurs to me, that when I have listened to people who engage in aberrant sexual behavior talk about themselves, they commonly mention that the "knew" of their sexuality at a very young age. Having been sexualized prior to puberty seems to be a common denominator, although I am sure there are exceptions.
