ADBE ( $36.50-$38)p/e= 45 Cap=$9Bil beats Wall Street expectations but profit falls

SAN JOSE, Calif., Mar 14, 2002 (The Canadian Press via COMTEX) -- Software maker Adobe Systems Inc. beat Wall Street earnings estimates and said Thursday it thinks the current quarter will be in line with expectations.

For the three months ending March 1, Adobe said it earned $49.8 million US, or 20 cents a share. In the same period last year, Adobe posted a net income of $69.8 million, or 28 cents a share.

Excluding one-time charges, Adobe reported earnings of $52.8 million, or 22 cents per share - down from pro forma earnings of $83.6 million, or 33 cents per share, for the comparable period last year.

The San Jose-based company, the leader in desktop publishing software and the second-largest PC software company in the United States said revenue for the three months was $267.9 million. That was down 19 per cent from $329 million in the year-ago period.

Analysts surveyed by First Call/Thomson Financial had expected Adobe to earn 20 cents per share on revenue of $267.6 million.

Shares of Adobe fell 94 cents, or 2.5 per cent, to close at $36.59 in regular trading on the Nasdaq Stock Market. The stock was up $1.31 to $37.90 in after-hours trading.

"It was nice to meet our targets in this tough economic environment," Adobe chief executive Bruce Chizen said in an interview.

Chizen said the solid quarter was driven largely by the 20 per cent year-over-year increase in revenue of Adobe Acrobat, the company's portable document format reader, which has become a standard for document distribution on the Web.

For the current quarter, Adobe estimated adjusted earnings of 24 cents to 27 cents per share on revenue of $305 million to $325 million. Wall Street analysts were estimating earnings of 25 cents a share on revenue of $312.5 million.

In February, Adobe acquired Accelio, an Ottawa-based electronic forms company, for $112 million Cdn in shares, topping a $68.5-million all-cash bid from Open Text Corp. of Waterloo, Ont.

It's unclear how Photoshop 7.0, a highly touted upgrade of Adobe's photo editing software program, will affect the company's outlook. The company will start shipping this quarter, and officials said they expect it will "significantly" impact annual results without giving concrete projections.

Analysts think Photoshop 7.0, which accounts for about one-third of Adobe's sales, will be a boost for the software maker even though the slump in technology spending has hurt the company's overall performance for the past few quarters.

"All the excitement hinges really on Photoshop 7 for the next few quarters," said Chris Galvin, an analyst with J.P. Morgan.

Galvin upgraded his recommendation for Adobe from "long-term buy" to "buy" in January after the company announced the new release.

FileNET sees second quarter below consensus

NEW YORK, April 17 (Reuters) - FileNET Corp., maker of software that manages Web content, on Wednesday said it expects second-quarter earnings to be in the range of 2 cents to 5 cents, lower than analysts had expected.

Analysts, on average, had expected the company to earn 6 cents a share, according to Thomson Financial/First Call.

The company also said it expected revenue of about $86 million.

The earnings per share exclude a $1.5 million charge for research and development related to the acquisition of eGrail.

For the year, the company revised its previous outlook to revenue of $355 million, down $5 million because of the continued weakness in the information technology industry. It expects earnings of 30 cents a share, plus or minus 5 cents a share before the eGrail charge..
