SAN JOSE -- Demand for foundry-processed wafers will grow 16% in 2002 over shipments in 2001, but bookings will be up just 2% sequentially in the first quarter over Q4 last year, according to tempered results from an annual survey by the Fabless Semiconductor Association.

The survey of 131 fabless companies, 14 integrated device manufacturers (IDMs), and several major silicon foundries shows respondents expecting a short-term 17% increase in wafer demand from the fourth quarter of 2001. But when companies claiming demand will double in 2002 were excluded, the survey results show a 2% sequential growth in demand in the current first-quarter period, said the trade group, which released the findings today.
