Fed beige book sees 'some signs' of economic improvement through Feb

WASHINGTON, Mar 06, 2002 (AFX-Asia via COMTEX) -- There are "some signs of improvement in economic activity" though February, according to the Federal Reserve's latest Beige Book survey of current economic conditions.
Six of the thirteen Fed district banks reported "some signs in economic activity," the survey said.

Only three reported weak economic conditions and the remaining four said conditions were mixed with some bright spots.

A majority of the districts said there were "modest improvements in retail sales recently, compared with the end of last year."

Although labor markets "continue to be slack" in most districts, contacts at temporary employment firms in several districts "suggest employment is bottoming out and new hires in selected occupation are said to be in short supply."

"While wage and price pressures are described as 'subdued' to 'largely nonexistent,' business contacts in many districts mentioned rising health insurance costs," the beige book said.
