Besides, I'm mulling over the next Pope... As you know, my opinion is that Mgr Jean-Marie Lustiger, Archbishop of Paris, will be next. However, I haven't, so far, backed it up with any clues whatsoever. Well, no longer: Some Vatican pundits used to hype up the election of an African pope --because of the Church's strong appeal to Africa and the fact that its most vibrant constituency belongs to the Third World. Just don't bet on it though: the love affair of Zambia's archbishop, Mgr Emmanuel Milingo, has actually spoiled Africa's last chances in the next papal bid. People will say, oh, come now! Those Africans are not reliable... look at that Zambian quack: his wedlock ridiculed the whole Church! Exit the African papabile.news.bbc.co.uk Who's next? Maybe another Polish/East European eminence might fit the bill? Fat chance:Pope may sack Polish prelate in sex scandalBy Matthew Day in Warsaw THE Pope was yesterday considering the future of the Archbishop of Poznan, one of Poland's most senior Roman Catholics, after allegations that he molested young clerics in his diocese. A Vatican inquiry has been launched into claims that Archbishop Juliusz Paetz used a tunnel between his palace and a seminary to reach trainee priests. In a letter to Poznan's senior clerics, Archbishop Paetz said: "I have never molested, I repeat, never molested any of our seminarians and priests." The accusations became public in a story headlined "Sin at the archbishop's palace" and published in Rzeczpospolita, a leading Polish newspaper. Rumours about the archbishop's sexual orientation and conduct had been circulating in Church and intellectual groups in Poznan for at least two years. Church groups, backed by Catholic intellectuals, had campaigned discreetly to force the archbishop to resign. He refused. Indeed, and that's why the timing of the whole thing is important: as months and years pass, the older Cardinals --ie those whose anti-Semitism is strongest-- are gently reaching the age limit beyond which they're no longer electors... Fascinating, isn't it?ireland.com And, last but not least, there's the relentless media campaign about Pope Pius XII's doubtful attitude towards Nazism and the persecution of Jews --think of Costa-Gavras' last movie Amen .
