If a nuclear weapon was detonated in the heart of Manhattan or in DC, it would be impossible for the people nearest it to evacuate.

The roads are not designed to carry that much traffic. The traffic control system is not designed to deal with hundreds of thousands of panicking people. People will have wrecks, their radiators will boil over, and they will abandon their cars and keep running. No wreckers will be available to tow the abandoned vehicles. The roads will become impossibly jammed.

Some people on foot will start carjacking. Fights will break out. Maybe gunshots. There will be looting of gas stations and grocery stores.

My plans involve hunkering down for a week or so, in the basement, with all the windows and the fireplace damper duct-taped shut. JMO. We live close to a major State Police station, so I expect local peace and order.
