SAN DIEGO, Mar 7, 2002 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ -- Leap Wireless International, Inc. (Nasdaq: LWIN chart, msgs), an innovator of wireless communications services, today announced strong early customer growth for 2002.

"In the fourth quarter of 2001, Leap was one of a select group of wireless carriers to meet or exceed published guidance for customer growth," said Harvey P. White, Leap's chairman and CEO. "During the first two months of this year we have seen continued strong customer growth that has exceeded our expectations. We have been able to achieve this strong customer growth while maintaining our tight focus on meeting operational metrics. Cricket has created a new category of wireless service targeted at growth segments of the industry with one of the highest incremental penetration rates and lowest cost structures in the industry."

Leap also announced that it has named Thomas A. Page to its board of directors. Page is the former chairman of the board of Enova Corporation and former chairman, president and CEO of SDG&E. Page is a director of the San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation and is also Chairman of Cuyamaca Bank, a director of Targeted Molecules Corp., Metallic Power, and an advisory director of Sorrento Ventures, a venture capital firm.
