It looks on the news like a string of mountaintops, traditionally a sanctuary for guerillas. But the sweep methods for bad terrain are a science that the US has been working on since Vietnam. If the terrorists don't go completely out of business over the next 2-3 years, a LOT of their corpses will be piled up. The strategy is two-fold: Make it politically untenable for nations to support them, and sweep them up completely where they nest. To accomplish the former, you nail the top dogs of the Axis of Evil, and the rest of the worlds tin horns begin to notice, and fall in line. The latter task is very similar to destroying a virus: weaken it, and strengthen the host's immune system-which then drives it out with heavy losses. the enemy in Afghanistan and the Philippines are luck. Mamma Green gets better and better at these things as she goes along. The Israeli's will, of course, do their usual fine job of imitation, and take care of the PLO for us. Powell's job is to make the right-sounding noises, while we look the other way...
