Anybody who thinks this fight is about preserving a couple of hundred thousand settlers on the West Bank has seriously missed the point.

OK, I see your point. The Palestinian cause may be winning - but I'd argue that if it is, it is because of Sharon's behaviour, not Arafat.
Arafat may have calculated this would happen, but I don't believe he has that much competence: nor do I believe he has enough control over most Palestinians to really do anything - they might listen to him if he voices their wishes, but hardly otherwise. Nor do I think Arafat will remain in control for long even if they do get peace - he's been too sidelined recently, and I think he's vulnerable to removal and replacement (by extremists, probably, if things go on as now).

But the Palestinian people are the losers in the fighting.
