I think that market timing applies in mutual funds or individual stocks. That said, it will be interesting to see if this kind of avoidance of a bear in a well diversified portfolio will make any real difference.

Techs got slaughtered back down around the 1998 lows but other stocks like retail and even doughnuts and coffee (sheesh) along with housing did extremely well. Is that just sector rotation as the bubble sector deflates?

In that case, it seems as if the risk inherent in market timing (you have to time both the sell and buy correctly and account for risk and taxes) wouldn't be worth it. I have no idea how this will turn out but I am glad that the economy seems to be turning a corner 6 months after the 9/21 lows <g>.
