Were it not for bad weather, we'd most likely all be speaking Mandarin instead of English.

When Columbus was about to give up on his first voyage to America, he sighted some birds and followed them to his first landfall on an island. The birds were taking a detour to avoid a hurricane. If his timing had been off by one day he would have missed the birds and his ships would have sailed right into the hurricane! Beats me what we'd be speaking if that had happened.
