<It seems to me that this product, GSM1x, will be something that China may find much more interesting than Europe will, at least for awhile.
Now, if China were to do such a thing, and completely overlay its existing GSM network with GSM1x, would there be any down sides related to continuing to use the heritage GSM MAP network, rather than something else?

John, although Koreans [and George Gilder] whined like a fleet of 747s about royalties on CDMA killing it, or slowing its development, there are 30 million CDMA subscribers in Korea. Korea is making a huge fortune from CDMA sales around the world using their homegrown subscriber device technology.

Imagine what will happen if China overlays their GSM networks with GSM1x and develops subscriber devices to match, then goes to Europe in the WTO with GSM1x all fully-developed and ready to roll out.

Good grief! GSM1x could be a vast industry. The desirability of 3G is now proven in Korea and I think panic is building in Europe especially, but also in other GPRS and Bleeding EDGE service providers.

China will be able to sell really cheap, high-quality GSM1x subscriber devices around the world and pay QUALCOMM 7% royalty without batting an eye.

This is very, very exciting.
