LINUX is our friend! I picked up a copy of LINUX Journal today and found the following server ads and an interesting quote:

Microway - back page ad features pictures of Dual ALpha 866 MHz and "Scalable 25 Node 50 Processor Cluster using 1.6 GHz Dual Athlon 1900+ MPs and Myrinet Interconnect. Peak throughput of 160 GFlops." Also, "Microway offers 1U and 2U dual Athlon/Pentium enclosures, plus Alpha configurations in 3U, 4U"

Raidzone - Pentium III file servers

Aspen Systems - "Serious Beowulf Clusters" - picture of Alpha-based Beowulf cluster. "...based on Alpha, Penium 4, and AMD technologies."

Einux - "High Density Just Got Denser" Seven AMD-based and five Intel-based servers are described, plus the "Einux SCA Supercomputer Cluster Array -- get up to 1 GFlop of power from under $400/GFlop." Uses dual 2000+ MP's in a 1U chassis with gigabit Ethernet between up to 150 nodes.

Appro - The Highest Performing 1U Servers. Ad features the Dual AMD Athlon MP 2000+ but also shows a Dual 2.2GHz P4 Xeon.

Amax Information Technologies - 3 bay, 9 bay and 15 bay file servers using dual PIII's.

Racksaver - 75% of the ad is devoted to new Dual 1U Athlon server for the "ISP and Beowulf Cluster market." Smaller ads for Dual Athlon 1U, Dual Xeon PIII 1U, 1U Quad Athlon (two nodes), and a couple 2U Athlon and Intel systems.

SW Technology - "Linux-based platforms include Intel, Alpha, AMD. Clusters and servers for laboratories, enterprise-level and business.

NEX COMputers Inc. - "18 Blade Servers from a 3U Enclosure" - PIII based. :-/

ASA Compupters - 1U: single and dual PIII's, single P4, dual Athlon MP's. 2U and 4U: PIII's.

Monarch Computer Systems - "Ultimate Linux Box, 2001 Editor's Choice, Best Technical Workstation." 2-page spread featuring SIX different dual Athlon systems.
Angstrom Microsystems - "Introducing Angstrom Racer 500 Series. Cool. Very Cool." A dual AMD XP1900+ 1U system designed to withstand 100degF ambient.

So, of 12 companies advertising servers and clusters, 3 are Intel only, 2 are AMD only, and, of the seven selling both CPU's, the emphasis is evenly split.

Then, in an article on Video Production using Linux, there's this gem by Technology VP Mark Brown at Rhythm and Hues, a Los Angeles film and television commercial postproduction studio. Their specialty is talking animals, and they did scenes in Harry Potter, Cats & Dogs, Dr. Dolittle 2, Little Nicky, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, The 6th Day, Stuart Little and Planet of the Apes. Also Pepsi commercials, etc. Here's the quote:

We have 50 Linux machines as desktops now and will have 250 Linux desktops by the end of 2002. We also have a 200-node Linux render-farm, but that expands or contracts with demand. We decided against actually building our own boxes and have ordered 100 Dual processor 1.5 GHz AMD machines with Angstrom Microsystems. This was the most cost-effective move at this time. All our current desktops are dual PIII. We will support a completely heterogeneous environment. Video cards and CPUs are two of the things we know we can't keep completely consistent at the desktop.
