First, it justifies the determination of the Jewish people to have a state where they could be taken in, after the horrors suffered in Europe. Second, it justifies their determination to fight back, to never passively allow themselves to be herded into box cars by their enemies, as it were. Third, it justifies their unwillingness to repatriate a population of Arabs that was willing to see them destroyed, even though they had followed all legalities and gone some way to live peaceably among them in the run- up to the creation of Israel. It has been well- established that the refugee problem was largely a creation of the Arab powers, who used the raido to advised the Palestinians to flee while they "drove the Jews into the sea" during the War of Independence. Fourth, it justifies their insistence on remaining a predominately Jewish state, especially through offering refuge to persecuted Jews from Arab states and the former Soviet bloc.
