And there are those stability problems again. What ya think they mean by "Power" users in the conclusion?

Richard,

Let me complete the table for you:

Compared to P4 2 GHz + SDRAM Serious Sam Max Payne
512 KB Cache instead of 256 KB (Northwood upgrade) +15% +22%
PC2100 DDR instead of SDRAM (RAM upgrade) +8% +14%
PC2100 DDR + 512 KB cache (RAM + Northwood) +36% +39%
533 MHz FSB + PC1066 RDRAM (RAM + chipset upgrade) +54% +42.5%
Athlon XP-2000+ PC2100 DDR (CPU and RAM upgrade) +71% +48.7%

It looks like if you want the best performance, you need a better CPU, and you need to replace the overclocked dual channel RDRAM with a standard single channel PC-2100 DDR

Joe

The danger of selective benchmark highlights is that they can bite you. Note a few pages down, we see that in the voice recognition, CORELDRAW, paradox benchmarks, the sis645 with single channel PC2700 and fsb-400 outperforms the dual channel pc1066 rdram with fsb533.

This is the disturbing part of rdram --- you have 4.2GB of bandwidth from the dual channel pc-1066, you have 2.7GB of bandwidth from the single channel pc2700.

So why are there still benchmarks where the system with the slower memory runs faster?

Go back a few months : The fact that this was happening when the price delta for pc800 to pc2100 was so large makes the box makers' decision quite simple. Is it too late for them to change their minds?

And we haven't even gone into that business winstone thing --- excel/word/access --- apps that IT departments have to support. See how pc800 does on that.
