I think that the government agencies charged with calculating the CPI are staffed with honest civil servants. I find it inconceivable that they are directed to tamper and lie with their statistics. Such tampering or lying will be exposed very quickly in our free and open society. I understand that it is hard to do hedonic adjustments, that's why they have been confined just to computers, which constitute only a tiny fraction of the CPI. And I don't necessarily agree with the way they do these adjustments, since I have not studied their methods. I am sure that if you want to dig, you will be able to get from them all the gory details.

As to your individual experience with inflation, it depends heavily on where you live. I can say that my experience is different. A number of things I consume today are as cheap as they were in 1990. Some are cheaper. Many are more expensive. I think an average of 30% or so inflation from then is about right.
