Microsoft seems to be flailing around, looking for a new direction, but without focus their chances of unseating any established sector leader are minimal.

100 arms, each swinging hefty mallots - bound to squish a number of "competitors". Besides which, leverage is a very powerful thing - while their products are rarely top-notch, the overall fit and resulting combinations is often quite beneficial.

Remember the tens of billions they threw into broadband? Mr. Softee is far from infallible.

They have many margins for error, can many of their "competitors" claim the same? Besides, the broadband battle is just beginning...

If you owned, for example, Borland, in the early 90's, you know what I'm talking about. It is an excellent company, but sometimes that's just not enough. There will be many Borlands in the next 5-10 years - it's a time for realism, not bravery, imho.

I love your spin and hope you're right as I don't own softy and do own sebl, ntap. But I remember how they came at the PDA OS (WIN CE) space, for example. At first their efforts were clumsy, but they just kept coming back with more and better. That particular battle is still ongoing but their tenacity is sobering, at least to me.

Mr. Softee is far from infallible.

Perhaps this could be the inspiration for some new terminology ... the name for a gorilla bombing out on a new product direction could be called "a Bob" or "doing a Bob"?

Beware, Bill is watching you...

Not for nothing, but I think there's a difference between a Utah-based subsidiary announcing a CRM product in a very different market from that in which Siebel competes, on the one hand, and the Windows division putting some real effort (and apparently, getting some traction) in low-end NAS products.

I think Microsoft is far more likely to make life difficult for storage vendors than CRM vendors. If you think about Microsoft's strengths, this is fairly obvious.
