Jobless claims fall by 5,000

WASHINGTON, Mar 07, 2002 (United Press International via COMTEX) -- The Labor Department said Thursday new claims for state unemployment benefits during the week ended March 2 fell by 5,000 to a seasonally adjusted annual rate 376,000.
Most economists on Wall Street were expecting first time claims to decline by 3,000 during the week.

Analysts said the report was more evidence the worst of the job cuts occurred last year.

Economists pay particular attention to the jobless claims report, often one of the first signals the economy has reached bottom.

The Labor Department also said the four-week moving average of claims, considered a more reliable indicator because it eliminates week-to-week fluctuations, fell to 372,750, its lowest level since August last year and down from 374,000 a week earlier.

The report showed the total number of people receiving jobless benefits fell to 3.406 million from 3.467 million a week earlier.

The unemployment rate for workers with unemployment insurance fell to 2.6 percent from 2.7 percent.
