Merrill cuts JDSU, puts 'sell' on Ciena (CIEN, JDSU) By Emily Church
Dealers said that shares of Ciena Corp. (CIEN) and JDS Uniphase (JDSU) were lower in pre-open trading. Merrill Lynch told clients overnight that sees the optical systems market declining closer to 20 percent in 2002 vs. its own earlier expectation for a 12 percent decline. It lowered JDS Uniphase to a neutral, saying was "moving to sidelines" from a mid-term buy on the stock. "At this point we now feel that the weaker fundamentals for JDSU's customers mitigate the near term upside potential from an inventory snap-back," Merrill said. As for Ciena, Merrill said it "we believe the negatives outweigh the positives for Ciena," and restarted coverage of the stock with a mid-term 'reduce/sell' and a long-term 'neutral.'
