BEIJING (AFX-ASIA) - Datang Telecom Technology and Industry Group formally launched its subsidiary Datang Mobile Communication Equipment Co Ltd to engage in the production and licencing of TD-SCDMA technology mobile telecom equipment,

Yang Hua, marketing manager at Datang Mobile Communication, said. Datang owns the patent for the TD-SCDMA mobile technology standard, which is set to compete with the other international 3G standards, CDMA and CDMA 2000.

Yang told AFX-ASIA Datang Mobile will allow other manufacturers to use the TD-SCDMA standard under licence, but will also produce its own mobile phones and base stations. Domestic mobile telecom service operators are currently in discussions with the company over the possible use of the TD-SCDMA standard, he said.

He added that the company is accelerating its research and development of mobile phone chips using the standard, and plans to launch its services and products on the market in 2003, in time for formal tests of the three international CDMA standards by the Ministry of Information Industry.

By that time, China will have more than the current two mobile service providers as potential customers for the company's products, he said, adding that Datang Mobile will also seek overseas markets for the standard.

Yang also noted that Datang and Siemens AG have joint ownership of patents for base station technology, but there are no plans for the two to cooperate with regard to mobile phone chip technology.

In a speech at a CDMA conference here today, MII electronic information product management bureau director Zhang Qi said the large size of the domestic mobile telecom market should provide a strong basis for the development of the country's indigenous TD-SCDMA standard.

How much will Qualcomm have to pay Datang Mobile for a TD-SCDMA license? When will Qualcomm have a TD-SCDMA chip ready?
