"As far as the Fab space goes, didn't somebody post that AMD did do some sort of Fab expansion??"

Yeah, it was revealed by a Saxony paper back in 2000 that AMD was building an expansion to Fab30 on top of it during operation. It was noted that they were going to cut holes so stuff can be moved into and out of the cleanroom. However, it apparently wasn't intended to increase the capacity of the fab...

Somewhat later, I hit upon the, clearly erroneous conclusion that AMD was going to use that extra space for implanting wafers.

Ok, I was wrong about several things. Hasn't slowed me down, though...

I wasn't really making a statement as much as I was asking a question and then expanding the reasoning behind the question. I really don't know if the capacity benefits from that smaller die will be greater the, equal to, or less then the capacity reduction from fabbing extra metal layers.

O.K., I don't see anything that I can disagree with there, because I haven't seen any comparison data. And since that data would probably be company confidential anyway, I wouldn't report the numbers even if I did. Just my WEG, and so I guess your WEG is as good as mine.

If I did make a guess it would probably be more of a WAG because all the education on this subject that I have is just from posts on SI. I am not even close to being a expert on semiconductor fabs. Your WEG might be more accurate then my WAG (if I made one), but since none of us have all the information on this either way they would be guesses.

The fab expantion (as someone already pointed out) would perhaps reduce or eliminate the reduction in wafer capacity. I guess we might be able to make a someone educated guess in a year and a half or so by seing how many Hammers AMD is producing.
