HONG KONG (AFX-ASIA) - Hong Kong CSL Ltd chief executive officer Hubert Ng said the company is expected to launch third generation mobile telecommunication services in the territory in the first half of 2003, at the earliest.

"Our timetable is very flexible. We are preparing ourselves, but this is not likely to happen this year," Ng told reporters on the sidelines of the Hong Kong Information Infrastructure Conference.

He said CSL will launch trial services this year with an initial investment of over 10 mln hkd. The long-term investment in 3G services should exceed several billion Hong Kong dollars, Ng noted.

He said he expects the monthly fee for 3G services to be about 400-500 hkd. "The price set above can secure operators with a reasonable return," Ng said.

CSL earlier reported an EBITDA of 1.364 bln hkd for 2001.

Ng said the 10 pct decline in ARPU during the year is due to a fall in the revenue of its IDD and roaming services in China as a result of price competition. "In terms of ARPU, we have half of our revenue derived from the mainland market," he said.
Ng said the company will be more prudent in its cost management but "we have no plans cut staff".
