Keith,

<< My assumption that Unicom could bridge their CDMA and GSM networks through GSM1X is completely off base. >>

Don't go quite that far. <g>

Unicom is potentially a great prospect for a GSM1x overlay of their existing GSM MAP core network(s), and due to their current size and future growth prospects they are the most logical carrier in the world to drive commercialization of IS-833.

In addition to the IS-833 overlay, they will surely want to consider a network to network interface (NNI) or bridge between the existing ANSI-41 based core CDMA network(s) and the existing GSM MAP core networks to enhance interoperability beyond some the interoperability afforded by dual-mode 1xRTT/GSM GPRS handsets, and to allow sharing of protocols and databases of some of the core network peripherals.

They will consider this, regardless of whether they implement a GSM1x overlay or not.

Presumably (some of/most of) the newer network gear is upgradeable to an all-IP core, and all IP-RANs, so there are any number of alternatives (GSM1x overlay being one) that Unicom has considered or must now be considering as they evolve the planning for the evolution of their networks.

Best,

- Eric -
