I agree. A lot more Palestinians than Israelis have been and will be killed.

The Palestinian cause may be winning - but I'd argue that if it is, it is because of Sharon's behaviour, not Arafat.

The PA launched this war. Do you think the Israelis would win more by not fighting back at all? Do you know where not fighting back gets you in that neighborhood? Do you think any democracy could stand not responding to a campaign of suicide bombers blowing up restaurants and dance halls?

I found this in today's opinionjournal.com:

The New Republic's Yossi Klein Halevi explains the strategy behind the current wave of Arab atrocities:

According to recently released documents seized by the Israeli army from Orient House, the P.A.'s former headquarters in Jerusalem, the Palestinian leadership decided one year ago to bring down [Israel's Prime Minister Ariel] Sharon by intensifying terror attacks that would convince the Israeli public he was a failure. [Yasser] Arafat had already destroyed the political careers of two previous prime ministers, [Shimon] Peres and [Ehud] Barak. Now it's Sharon's turn.

Sharon, under pressure from the US, just announced that he is dropping the demand for seven days quiet before moving on to Tenet. This is a big win for Arafat, who is clearly making progress with the plan for destroying Sharon's career.

The US just hopes to get a few weeks or months of relative quiet. But when his program is so clearly working, why should Arafat change it?
