I dont quite understand their thinking here. Wouldn't Intel chips at some point start competing with IBMs at the very high-end ? Or do they think, that its OK to risk losing their chip business, if they can make money in other areas (services etc) ?

I think IBM is smart enough to realize that Intel's processors are going to overtake them eventually anyway. Better to join them then to fight them.
