When I awaken during the night, I like to get up and walk around the house. I like to look out the windows and admire the city when the streetlights are on and the house lights are off. I like to engulf the silence and the stillness when nothing stirs, indoors or out. I like to pour a glass of sherry and look at the moon. This is my favourite time for counting my blessings.

My world looks so different in the wee hours. I don’t turn on any lights. My eyes are accustomed to the darkness, and enough light comes in the windows that I can easily navigate. In darkness, shape and shadow replace texture and colour. Every sound seems significant and every movement seems to echo. Sounds, overshadowed in daytime, get their chance for an audience. Clock ticks seem like thunderclaps.

I like to sit in front of the fire. I prop my feet on the coffee table and watch the flames. The heat warms the soles of my fuzzy slippers. I wiggle my toes. I take a sip of sherry and feel its warmth in my tummy. I gather cushions and prop myself into indescribable comfort. I wiggle until my terry-cloth housecoat adapts itself. I survey my surroundings. Unfinished housework is invisible. It’s my think time.

It’s hard to imagine that anyone would need to take a break from sleeping, but that’s exactly what I’m doing. I reflect on yesterday. I plan tomorrow. I embrace the immediate. As sleep brings rejuvenation to body and mind, these times bring similar benefits to the sole. I need all three.

Cheers, PW.

P.S. It takes will power to avoid the refrigerator.
