The choice under discussion was that He wouldn't help automatically or in all instances, but would in some cases and in differing degrees. Additionally, that His justice guarantees a final reckoning of all that is owed to us or required from us, but that His mercy is called upon for special intervention in this life. As a matter of mercy, therefore, it is a gift, and may or may not be granted. Since intervention could easily be too heavy handed, and impair the autonomy of creatures, it is supposed that God is economical, and seeks a good result with the least means necessary. Therefore, miracles (as opposed to special providences) would be quite rare, and mainly granted as a sign to encourage the faithful........
