Hey, read up. The Pope generously awarded us dominion over Ireland back around 1200, and later monarchs tried controlling more because of the banditry problem and because they kept allying with the French. Think of it as our 13thC Afghanistan, but allied with the USSR and geographically much closer, and you've got the idea.
The only use for the land was found in the 19thC, when it turned out to be useful for breeding race-horses...

The only bit that really puzzles me is why we bothered sending over troops to try and protect the Catholics in 1969. Given these were the guys working with the Nazis in WWII, I figure we should have just let the Prods massacre the lot and good riddance. Then we could have forced independence on them and let Dublin worry... Ian Paisley is like a cross of Jesse Helms and Pat Robertson, without the intelligence, humour or objectivity.
