"We are just at the start, but this year we will see a rapid builout in Europe," said Mats Dahlin, head of market area EMEA at Ericsson. "I'm convinced that 3G will be an even greater success than 2G," he claimed. "'When will 3G happen' is the wrong question to ask," he added. "It is already under way." On the subject of MMS, Ericsson said full network implementation of MMS should be available in the second quarter of 2002. Dahlin said the vendor is currently conducting 50 trials globally, and has already won its first deal, with Vodafone. He said Ericsson has also shipped 30 WCDMA systems globally, although he reaffirmed that the company still expects 2002 to be a difficult year for wireless infrastructure sytstems with sales development set to be flat or down by up to 10%. The company has previously said it expects business to pick up next year, however, with around 10% growth predicted. Handsets for 3G is the new race, said Dahlin, and they demand new skills and closer interaction with other vendors and operators. This was one of the reasons for the union with Sony, he said. Sony Ericsson has already launched its first handsets and has said it plans to bring out a dual-mode 3G handset before the end of this year. It has already launched an MMS-enabled phone, the T68i. "I want to show we are not just talking," said Dahlin. "3G is really here." At CeBIT Ericsson is demonstrating several solutions including: a system that allows operators to charge for MMS services in real-time; multimedia messaging, instant messaging, wireless e-mail and unified messaging; live ENGINE networks; a mobile Internet Easy Access Solution; the Mobile Executive, or how to expand your PBX into the mobile network; Ericsson Mobile Platforms and Bluetooth licensing; a range of mobile applications such as the Mobile salesman; a live WCDMA system including applications and billing. << - Eric -
