Tony, Re: "I think he works with peewee servers."

Of course he does - they are all powered by Athlon MP.

Tony, thread, I just wanted to get additional data to back up my claims, and I found this.

anandtech.com

It's about a year old, so I'm looking for something more recent. However, it gives a very good idea about the market for large cache Xeon servers.

According to Anand, the size of the market for 4-way, 8-way, and above servers is 16% of the overall server market.

Of this 16%, Intel owns 76% of the 4-way space and 37% of the 8-way and above space. That means that large cache processors are included in 10.6% of total server CPUs shipped.

Math: 76% * 12% + 37% * 4% = 10.6%

I haven't been able to find any estimates about the size of the total available server market, but ~10% should be quite large, and the fact that these CPUs have an ASP well over $1000 means that Intel is making quite a lot from this design. Of course, this is as of the Spring of 2001, but I'd be happy to have anyone find something more recent.

When Dan says he works with servers he means they are involved in his posting here.
