My instincts are to dismiss it out of hand...but I don't know your friend. My reasons (I'm an IT exec, for background) a) any major firm that doesn't have accounts disabled as an individual who has high level access is walking in to meet with the person who's firing them... b) any major firm that doesn't escort someone who had high level system access to the door and take their access badge after firing them... c) any major firm that doesn't have virus protection on its desktops, much less its servers/mail servers/firewalls... d) any major firm that can't react to shut things down before five THOUSAND servers are affected... doesn't deserve to survive. The story looks suspicious to me (again, please understand I don't know anyone involved, so I'm not trying to cast aspersions, just telling you my thoughts) because of all of the above, plus e) viruses that "wipe the hard drives completely clean" - that type of talk is usually a sign of a virus hoax story f) why would it take a six hour conference call to get a location back online? "online to the system" doesn't make sense to me in this context; the WAN connection wouldn't have been down, because that'd have been router based and unaffected by any virus, and if the local offices have a server, what system are they "online" to? g) 75% of the systems were back up within 24 hours, but they lost 2 trading days? what does "back up" mean, if not transacting business? h) sabotage is covered by business continuity, general and special IT insurance, at least in part i) I also can't imagine that with five thousand servers in 1400 offices, with all the staff at those offices knowing what happened and a couple of thousand IBM techs, it would not have hit any news sources at all No offense (OK, that's one of those useless statements, 'cause it always precedes something offensive <gg>), but I can't bring myself to believe it. Best regards WUWT
