We would be offering CDMA-based services by end of this year. At present, we are focussing on enterprise customers. The limited mobility service does not apply to corporates but residents, and this is the segment we will get into, in the next stage, told chairman and CEO, Hughes Network Systems Pradman Kaul. He however, declined to divulge the investment details for the new offering. Asked if the company has initiatied negotiations with equipment players for this, Mr Kaul said, the company s vendor for networking is Lucent and hence the company would be a potential equipment provider. But we are also negotiating with other vendors. Stating that the company s focus on Maharashtra operations in the circle became self-standing, he said that Hughes would become cash positive in the circle in another year. Mr Kaul said that the company s subscriber base is estimated to touch 1,50,000 by March and 2,00,000 by end of June. The service would be available to customers in two flavours, while the two-way system would allow users to send and receive information via satellite, the economical one-way system would allow customers to recive information via satellite at speeds identical to the two way system. The one way system sends information using phone line. Direcway would be made available to the Indian customers for a one-time hardware cost of Rs 30,000 for one way and upwards of Rs one lakh for two way and the recurring charges range from 1,000 per month to 20,000 per month, depending on the service plan chosen by the end customer. PTI ======== The expensive system described in the last parargraph sounds like a satellite data connection and not a WLL system for the masses. DPR
