If you read carefully, you will find that they already have 193nm steppers, enough to run test wafers using 193nm laser lithography tools. Indeed, enough steppers just to run test wafers would probably be sufficient to meet all of AMD's demands for 90nm MP Hammer processors through the start of conversion of Fab30 to 193nm laser lithography. But then, what would they use to continue developing their 64nm process using 193nm laser lithography tools.

There is one other potential. AMD is going to set up a 300mm pilot production line at Fab12a using 193nm laser lithography tools. Prior to Fab30, SDC was AMD's pilot production facility with a run rate of 600 wafers per week. Pilot production at Fab30 was 600 wafers per week. It is possible that AMD could ramp the pilot production line at UMC Fab12a to 600 wafers per week with first 90nm production shipments beginning in Summer of 2003. This could buy them the time needed to accommodate the delay they will encounter at Fab30 should they make the decision to switch to 193nm laser lithography tools there too late to begin 90nm shipments from Fab30 in 2003.

With a pilot production line at UMC Fab12a ramped to 600 wafers per week, AMD would have the equivalent of about 1400 200mm wafers per week production, at 90nm. This should yield at least as many 90nm Clawhammer processors as AMD is currently getting 180nm Palominos from 2800 wafers per week at Fab30.
