Silent' volcanic quake......Meterologists reported that a huge section of the south slope of Hawaii's Kilauea Volcano slipped 3.5 inches toward the sea during Nov. in an event termed the first 'silent earthquake' ever recorded at an active volcano.
The researchs said the 12 by 6 mile chunk also shifted about 5 miles deep into the earth's crust.
The dectection of the 36 hour slide by global positioning satellites led one scientist to warn of a possible disaster for Pacific Rim nations. U of C at Santa Cruz geophysicst Steven N. Ward speculated that a sudden shift of a land mass that size could trigger a cataclysmic tsunami, endangering coastlines as far away as California,Chile or Australia...not to mention All of the Pacific Islands......
