I've been to China only once, for just over three weeks, and I spent less than a week in Beijing. I went with a group from the National Zoo. We spent some time at the Wolong Panda Preserve in Szechuan Province and I got to see an brand new panda baby and to hug an adult.

There was so much about Beijing I found interesting. It was one of the most "different" places I've been. I think I could have spent a few weeks just watching traffic go by. The bicycle traffic was like the Tour de France the way they rode in packs at breakneck speed. Trying to figure out the etiquette and rules of the road was fun, and how they dealt with riders who capsize (ignore them). Some of us would join in with the women who were exercising on the sidewalks. We'd follow along with the leader. They'd giggle. We'd giggle. The markets were interesting, too, except that seeing kitties and puppies on sale for din-din was hard to take. And watching construction where the rules are all different. They hang bamboo mats from the beams in high-rise construction. And then there was the red crepe paper offered as toilet paper. I was just fascinated. I could have spent a week hiking the Great Wall. But the pollution is terrible.

I have a State Dept friend who is heading to Guang Zhou, which is a nice little city, so I may visit while she's there.
