Oh well.... he's a journalist and a bear. He has to write something or how is he going to justify his job or sell papers?

Ebay is on the spendy side though, I would have to agree, but a mature market? I don't know about that. I think they may have a growing market for years to come between the kids growing up now very comfy buying on line and corporations using their services. Even if the grey market is diminishing, I think that corporations aren't going to give up selling on ebay any more than buyers are going to want to get better prices. Kinda like Walmart taking share from May Company (well.... that was the name they went by when my parents bought my clothes there when I was a kid) or Payless taking share from Florsheim (are they in biz still?). The down years allowed new entrants to the sales arena and a few were able to successfully and probably forever change the retail landscape even as the economy improved. I think ebay has a chance to do the same.

Even though I haven't been a buyer or seller (I'd have to say the new fees are probably a deterrent to a small time seller) in quite a while, it's not because I have bought elsewhere.... it's just that I don't want anything at the moment. But when I need something, I'll probably check out ebay before going to a retail shop. And I can bet that teenagers are going to buy a bunch on ebay in the years to come. Sheesh! One of my daughter's friends even started a small time biz and sells on ebay and has since she was in 7th grade. That's not going away. Alan is too short sighted, imo.

What to do? What to do? Mary Meeker vs. Alan Abelson.... Hmmmmmmm.... I give Alan the nod on ebay's valuation and Mary the blue ribbon for seeing the company's long term prospects.
