John! Where did you get *that* from? What I said (and the links provided) didn't even imply that imho. My belief is that a 1x phone in a GSM1x environment *will* be limited. The GSM1x MSN has everything to do with how much a 1x phone appears to be a GSM1x phone to GSM-MAP.

Here's why.

The QCOM GSM1x block diagram shows a gateway (my term), the GSM1x Mobile Switching Node ("MSN"), between the 1x RAN and the GSM Core Network ("CN").

QCOM claims the CN is an "unmodified GSM core network" and the RAN 1x is "commercially available" (see GSM Overview). Whether "commercially available" means unmodified or not is inconclusive. Let's assume it is.

That means that the only device that makes a distinction between GSM1x phones and 1x phones is the gateway. This implies that, when the gateway recognizes communications to/from a 1x phone, it modifies the communications. In particular, the gateway likely discards a message from the CN requesting authentication from a 1x phone, instead of passing the message on. In addition, the gateway likely sends 'authentication' to the CN to keep the CN happy.

This post is obviously speculative, but is more reasonable to me than expecting "no limitation" for 1x phones.
