RtS,
thx for your reply..

Let's address your topics of interest:

Your IDTI short .. Well IDTI is sort of a CY clone. Both came from "SRAM memory" but morphed into something more, usually aligned with comm.chips, DSPs and NPUs. CY also got an opto-switch project (MEMS) going on... there may be some cheap laggards like CATS, SRAM.OB oR ISSI and the like that still got room to grow..

Power semis:
you seem to reinforce my thoughts on this issue..

U.S. based .. MSCC, FCS, POWI, ONNN (to some extent also CPCL), CREE should also qualify (SiC Silicon Carbide),

Japan : Sanken Electric, Shindengen Electric, Sansha Electric, NIEC (Nihon Inter Electronics), Origin Electric, KOA, Chuo Seisakusho, Tabuchi electronics, Kyosan Electric,

UK: TT Electronics (London traded)

others..
You know I like your TQNT. I would not sell. Rather look to get the likes of MTLC, TXCC or VTSS when demand for comm ICs gets up again. Hint: Gigabit Ethernet (and also 10-GIGE) will gradually conquer SONET turf. Only invest in firms that have GiG-E chip solutions or do suppoer the "Gigaframe" G.709 (I think it's called) structure in Sonet transport (that's protocol agnostic - could be used to implement Gigabit Ethernet applications as well)

RtS,
your comments on ESST made me look a tad deeper. Guess what I found ? An indirect link on NJR (New Japan Radio) 6911.J..

recently: ESST guided up for this quarter on higher than expected demand for consumer video/audio/dvd/dts/svcd gear and instantly got upgraded by those brokers..

well, NJR got upgraded strongly BECAUSE OF THE SAME NOTION !!

That prompted me to look at the sensitivity of Japan stocks to their US peers..

2 exampls..

Category Ticker Stock High
Photonics JDSU JDS Uniphase April-2000
Photonics 5801.J Furukawa Electric August-2000
Mixed Signal ESST ESS Technologies Februar-2000 Februar 2002
Mixed Signal 6911.J New Japan Radio September-2000

this would point to a 5-7 months delayed reaction in Japan's markets for the selected investment "topics"

Since I already got New Japan Radio, I'll go on looking for ESST "clones" in Japan. Mabe I'll find something worth of interest. The closer the better: mixed signals, DVD, DTS, VCD, AC-3, MPEG decoding - that's what I'll be looking for..

RtS ... re: Asahi Kasei / ESST competitor !

I researched Japan a tad more with regard to mixed signal/audio chipmakers and found this company: ASAHI KASEI (formerly called Asahi Chemical) .. Ticker 3407.J .. trading aroudn 435 Yen (PSR 0.50). Bought in today..

They are active in chemicals, building products and mixed signal semiconductors. Group website is here: www.asahi-kasei.co.jp

And their semi division is here. Big player in the US also: www.akm.com

Now from many analysis of board level components of audio systems I do know that AKM's solutions usually have way higher quality than ESST's chips. For example AKM's AC97 codecs are famous - positively renowned for excellent acousic parameters - even beating CRUS offerings..

Their stuff is in many DVD, DTS & upcoming digital players as well. Plus many professional audio solutions are emplying their chips. I have a "high end" soundcard made by RME also. What does one find on that board ? CODECs mad by AKM..

They upgraded wafer capacity 20% in 2000/2001. Mix of offered chips is way broader than ESST's range. Everyhing included..
