We should not be surprised at all by the swindling. It goes on all the time everywhere. Nowadays, greed and profit are not dirty words.

As most of the Indian buyers are illiterate/uneducated, they are easily swindled!

I have seen this happen somewhere in Asia:-

A naive customer hands her a jeweler a known weight of almost pure gold to be fashioned into a couple of bangles. The jeweler verifies the weight by weighing, and measurements are taken. Then, in the absence of the customer, the crooked jeweler removes a fraction of the gold. Then he alloys the bigger portion of the gold with a mixture of copper and zinc equal to the weight of the stolen gold. From this alloy he fashions the bangles.................
