Hsinchu, Taiwan-based United Microelectronics Corp. (UMC), the world’s No. 2 foundry, today reported its third straight month of falling sales.

Net sales for the month totaled $103.8 million (3.6 billion Taiwanese dollars), down 52 percent from last year’s $216.3 million (7.5 billion TWD) and 10 percent below January’s $115.3 million (4 billion TWD). The company’s January sales were about 9 percent below December’s sales of about $126.9 million (4.4 billion TWD).

For the first two months of the year, UMC’s sales totaled $219.2 million (7.6 billion TWD), a 55 percent decline from the $490.2 million (17 billion TWD) reported for the same period a year ago.

No. 1 foundry Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) said Thursday that February sales dipped for the first time in months, partly because of the Chinese Lunar Year holidays and the shorter month.

TSMC, also based in Hsinchu, reported sales of about $331.6 million (11.5 billion TWD), compared with $346.1 million (12 billion TWD) in January.
