"The focus on industry growth areas is paying off for Siemens," said Volker Jung, head of the German vendor's information and communications business. "We have not focused on North America and the optical transmission market, which has been the darling of the analysts," he added. "These policies are now paying off, as others now take write-offs for liabilities, high-risk project financing and goodwill." When asked about Siemens's policy on vendor financing, Rudi Lamprecht, president of the company's information and communication mobile (ICM) unit, said Siemens "maintained a cautious approach," but understood that it was a requirement of many carriers, though not the main factor that would win an infrastructure deal. As a result of its prudence, Siemens recorded an overall gain in 2001, due "primarily to high order backlogs," admitted Jung, and recorded sales bettered only by Nokia. "[We] recaptured the number two position, followed by Alcatel, Ericsson, Lucent, Cisco and Nortel." He said the ICM and Siemens Business Services units were in the black, and that the company was striving to get its information and communication networks (ICN) business out of the red soon. Jung added that the company was targetting market growth in its core sectors. He said the IP convergence market, in which Siemens claims the top spot, was set to grow by more than 65% between 2001 and 2005 to be worth E30 billion, whilst broadband access was set to grow from E11 billion to E17 billion in the same time frame. Siemens's IP convergence platform, SURPASS, has now been installed by 55 carriers, whilst its HiPath IP migration products for the enterprise market have seen more than 100 new orders since the beginning of the financial year on 1 October 2001, said Thomas Ganswindt, ICN president.
