It would seem that almost all the famines of the last 100 years have a basis in politics and economic warfare, and not in the amount of food available.

As far as El Nino is concerned, the effects are real enough. Peru gets washed out to sea and Indonesia goes up in smoke. This isn't some fantasy dreamed up by the Greens.
