Athlon 2100+ is now in stock at Pricewatch! Got there prior to the announcement. Much better than Intel's last few launches which were all paper!

In kernel-land, obviously anything goes since it doesn't have to interoprate with anything but itself (apart form syscalls). However I believe that the Linux kernel does the same thing as userland code, since it is written in C and compiled by the same compiler.

In userland, what registers are and are not saved is very clearly specified by the ABI. Linux uses the System V ABI, as documented here:
