Asia Embraces BREW, Qualcomm Exec. Says

March 11, 2002 (TOKYO) -- Qualcomm Inc. of the United States held a press conference
in Tokyo on March 8, and announced that the company's BREW application platform
for mobile phones is well accepted in Asian countries.

At the BREW Developers Conference in Beijing held from March 5-7, 200 enthusiastic
developers attended the lectures about the development cases in Japan and Korea, and
participated the company's technical sessions, said Paul E. Jacobs, the group president
of Qualcomm Wireless & Internet Group.

Peggy Johnson, president of Qualcomm Internet Services, reported the current situation
in Korea. As of the end of February 2002, there are 234,000 users for the BREW service
developed by Korea Telecom Freetel, CO., Ltd., which started in November 2001. There
are already more than 100 applications such as games and banking services, and
fee-based programs being downloaded exceed 40,000 cases per day in average. In
Korea, there are four kinds of BREW compatible handsets made by Samsung
Electronics Co., Ltd. and LG Electronics Inc, and "even though these handsets are the
expensive high-end models, about 80 percent of handset purchasers choose to buy
these BREW compatible handsets," says Johnson.

Japan is making a slow start in this area, but Qualcomm Japan Inc. announced that
Qualcomm and KDDI Corp. have reached the definitive agreement on the commercial
launch of BREW by KDDI. C3003P by Matsushita Communication Industrial Co. Ltd.,
the new handset for the cdmaOne servce by au Group, will be released in mid March,
and this is going to be Japan's first handset loaded with the embedded-type BREW.
This handset has "gpsOne," the position location system using GPS, and also has an
"electric compass" using a geomagnetic sensor. Preinstalled BREW applications
include NAVITIME Map Viewer by Navitime Japan Co., Ltd. and 3D animation short
messaging service, Kyara Komyu, by K Laboratory Co., Ltd.

KDDI plans to complete system to enable distributing download-type BREW
applications to handsets during fiscal year 2002 ending March 2003.
