In addition, Juniper Networks Inc., the No. 2 maker of networking equipment rose on rumors it would soon announce a deal with German telecommunications giant, Deutsche Telekom AG . "There's a rumor that Cisco would buy Ciena," Bear Stearns tech strategist Sal Catrini. The market also was abuzz on unconfirmed reports about Juniper-Deutsche Telecom deal. Juniper Spokeswoman Kathy Burr said the company would not comment on rumors. "We can't announce customers without approval," she said. "It's not something I can comment on." Juniper shares closed up $1.40, more than 10 percent, at $14.71. Ciena shares closed up $1.02, or 11 percent, at $10.29, while the shares of ONI closed up 56 cents, or nearly 9 percent, at $7.11. But Cisco shares were off 38 cents, or 2 percent at $17.42. Last month, Ciena announced it would buy ONI in a $900 million stock deal to bolster its presence in the metro optical networking market. In the futures market, the Cisco-Ciena rumors sent the March 10 calls -- which give the holder the right to purchase the shares at $10 during the month -- up 50 cents to 70 cents. March options go off the board Friday. Investor interest in buying the March 10 calls indicated they think there is a chance something will be announced before that, said an American Stock Exchange trader, who declined to be identified. "I don't personally believe these rumors," the trader added. On the Amex, the March 10 calls rose 50 cents to 70 cents on Amex volume of about 1,278 contracts and open interest of 8,288 contracts. In addition, Buckingham Research Group analyst Gina Sockolow upgraded several networking equipment stocks, including Sonus Networks Inc., up 36 cents, more than 9 percent, to $4.19. In addition, some telecommunications companies attending a Merrill Lynch conference may have served as a backdrop for investor anticipation, Catrini added. ibexx
