What do you mean "they [Avid] had to"?

I don't know if you realize it, but FCP damn near killed Avid. Avid started playing games with Apple by pushing Mac software to the back-burner while they cranked out software and cards for the "PC masses". Apple then bought the software and the hired the development team from Macromedia that wrote FCP - in essence telling Avid "screw you!" FCP and the Macs, in case you are wondering, have taken over most of the entire video editing scene. It's hard to beat FCP on a TiPB in the field - particularly for instant news. And those same people use Power Macs in their shops and offices because they are compatible with FCP - Windows ain't.
