When AMD first released the x86-64 specification, they said that their tests showed a 10% increase in code size. I claim this difference may very well show the x86-64 compilers getting better. I would not be surprised in the slightest to see the difference down to 0% in 12 months. I would also expect to see another few percent in average speed increases.
