I might be wrong, but I do smell a bit of a screw-up(and some cover-up) going on here.

a company commander has full authority over his machine guns and mortars...he needs to check with no one regarding their deployment.

this was a tough job...predators are fine...but eyeball recon is necessary and was insufficient...the recon was done by a few SF guys who HALOed in at night...they were not able to get around and see everything they wanted to. the terrain is wicked and there was no realistic way for recon elements to get there overland.

in cases like this recon by fire is a viable and useful technique...send some units in...let them engage and determine the enemy's strength, arms and positions from that initial contact...it is part of our tactical doctrine and not a bit unusual.
