Pearly, the reason the second tower (the one hit later) collapsed first, is because the plane hit at a much lower level, thus the overburden (the weight of all the floors above) as greater. I also thing that the second plane actually hit a corner beam (or at least created an intense fire near the corner beam), which are more critical in the mechanical structure.
